Instagram admits offering too many videos to its users

Good news for Instagram purists. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has admitted that the platform has overemphasized videos in 2022, and that it will look to re-emphasize photos in 2023.

In a Story posted by Mosseri on his profile Instagram staff, the person in charge of the platform recognizes that there is a ” number of photographers who were upset » by the way Instagram has focused on video for the past few months.

Indeed, it has been several months now that Meta made many changes to its platform, in particular to allow it to remain competitive against the Chinese giant TikTok. Instagram had then largely copied its competitor, by always offering more video content, to the detriment of photos. Nevertheless, it is these that have made the reputation of the social network in recent years.

Instagram promises to focus more on photography in the future

« I think we were too focused on video in 2022 and pushed the ranking too far and basically showed too many videos and not enough photos “, admits the CEO of the social network. Mosseri announces that Instagram has since worked behind the scenes to restore a balance between photo and video, and promises to offer fewer videos to users in the future.

Many creators had stepped up to the plate in the face of Instagram’s new policy, which put Reels more and more in the spotlight every day. Big names like Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian and Chrissy Teigen have signed a petition started by designer Tati Bruening, whose career as a photographer had been impacted by the turn of Instagram.

Instagram will now take into account how often a person likes and comments on photos versus videos to determine which content will appear first in their News Feed.

Photos, however, will always be an important part of Instagram, Mosseri reiterated. ” There will always be people who like and are interested in finding photos on Instagram and elsewhere. And I want to make sure we’re very clear about it “, he added. And you, do you use Instagram more to view photos or videos? Do not hesitate to tell us in the comments.
