By Isabelle Roussouly/February 23, 2024/ 14 Views Dear friend, dear friend,

In general, when I tell you about a plant or a natural remedy, I prefer to choose local references.

Why go looking for health solutions on the other side of the world when they exist close to home?

But today, I am going to make an exception because sometimes, there is no local equivalent to what is done elsewhere. I want to talk to you about desmodium.

This plant, which botanists call desmodium adscendens, is a perennial, creeping and wild herbaceous native to West Africa (1).

It is today cultivated there as well as in Latin America.

It was introduced to France by Dr Pierre Tubéry and his wife Anne-Marie(2).

The main strength of desmodium is to protect the liver.

The liver is an absolutely vital organ

The liver is an extraordinary organ. It is responsible for many vital functions(3).

It has many essential functions for the body (3,4).

In particular (3,4):

It produces bile which facilitates the digestion of fats. It also helps eliminate certain toxins. It stores glucose, vitamins and minerals which were taken up by the intestine during digestion and which the blood brings to it. It releases them into the bloodstream when your body needs them. It also synthesizes proteins that participate in blood clotting. It filters and cleans the blood. The liver eliminates as much as it can drug residues, plastics, endocrine disruptors and all the toxins that damage your body.

When you take care of your liver, your whole body benefits.

An enzyme regulating plant

A little more precisely, desmodium regulates the level of transaminases.

These enzymes are present in the body, particularly in the liver and muscles.

When they are present in excess in the liver, they destroy the cells.

This reaction of the human body can have various causes (5,6,7):

an acute viral attack (especially hepatitis A and B); other various infections; toxic liver damage linked to certain medications hepatic ischemia linked to a heart attack or other cardiac disorder; obstruction of the bile duct; excessive alcohol, sugar or drugs.

Certain additional factors can play a role, such as a sedentary lifestyle, pollution or too rich a diet.

The 3 main actions of desmodium

Some doctors, open to herbal medicine, recommend the use of desmodium to accompany chemotherapy treatments (1,2).

Indeed, desmodium helps protect the liver against the toxicity of these heavy treatments (1,2).

In addition, this plant limits the inflammation of the liver that these treatments cause.

But desmodium also has draining properties.

It helps the liver eliminate accumulated toxins. Desmodium can therefore be taken as a detox treatment in the spring or during self-care, which are good times for this type of operation (1,2).

The body adapts to the new season and a detox treatment helps it make the transition(1,2).

Finally, desmodium has regenerating power for the liver. It promotes the production of glutathione, a natural antioxidant in the human body (1,2).

Liver cells are thus protected against free radicals, which improves their functioning (1,2).

What does your herbalist offer you?

At your herbalist, you will find different forms of desmodium available(1).

There are ampoules that you can drink with a glass of water(2).

But you will also find herbal teas, powder or even capsules.

It is the stems and leaves that are used.

If you opt for an infusion, you can take one tablespoon per cup of desmodium(1).

3 large cups per day are enough to accompany medication treatment or a detox cure.

It is best to spread these cups out throughout the day.

If you prefer ampoules, take one or two per day maximum(2).

The capsules are taken during meals.

In any case, do not hesitate to discuss it with your doctor.

Desmodium is not for everyone

Like any medicinal plant, desmodium should not be consumed without taking some precautions.

First, this remedy is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women (2).

Likewise, children under 12 are considered too young to take desmodium herbal tea(2).

Finally, desmodium is not recommended for patients who take anticoagulants or who suffer from allergies to salicylic derivatives(2).

And if you live in Europe, and it seems unacceptable to you to consume a non-European product for ecological reasons, you still have an alternative: milk thistle.

But the action of the two plants is not exactly the same.

Like desmodium, milk thistle protects and detoxifies but it drains the body less.

And if you don’t know which of the two to choose, some herbalists have found the solution: they offer the two mixed!

Naturally yours,

Augustine of Livois
