If the main “attraction” of this year’s Intel Innovation event was the launch of the Core Ultra mobile processor Meteor Lake Core Ultra mobile processor launchedteam Blue also shared more information about future ranges, including a demo showcasing the AI capabilities Lunar Lake processors which will be launched in a year, and also answered some burning questions from the press.

Samples of Lunar Lake processors, which will succeed Meteor Lake, were demonstrated smoothly on a few laptops during the press conference. Lunar Lake processors will be the first to integrate compute tiles with specialized artificial intelligence accelerators. These artificial intelligence tiles, as well as CPU tiles including Lion Cove P-cores and Skymont E-cores will be manufactured on 18A nodes. One of the laptops ran the Audacity audio app with the Refusion AI plugin and was able to generate a short song sample replicating Taylor Swift’s style in just 10 seconds. The other laptop ran the GIMP image app paired with an AI plugin from Refusion Stable Diffusion which created the image of a giraffe wearing a cowboy hat. Both instances used locally installed AI models.

Regarding future models, an updated roadmap was presented, outlining Arrow Lake, followed by Lunar Lake for 2024, and Panther Lake for 2025. Arrow Lake is more or less the desktop version of Meteor Lake, just like Panther Lake is the desktop version of Lunar Lake. However, all Panther Lake tiles will be manufactured on 18A nodes and will go into production in Q1 2024, and Intel is expected to include more powerful Cougar Cove P cores on these models. Starting with Arrow Lake, all desktop CPU lines will require a new socket LGA-1851 lGA-1851.

The last, and probably most interesting, point came up during the Q&A session following the keynote, when CEO Pat Gelsinger revealed that Intel would adopt something similar to the technology 3D V-Cache from AMD for the next processors that will follow Meteor Lake. This system will probably be developed in collaboration with TSMCsince Intel already subcontracts part of the Meteor Lake tiles to Taiwanese foundries, but it would be designed to be compatible with the processors Foveros . As Gelsinger says, “[…] this particular type of technology is not part of Meteor Lake, but in our roadmap, you see the idea of 3D silicon where we will have the cache on one die, and we will have the CPU compute on the die stacked at- on it, and obviously using EMIB as Foveros we will be able to dial in different capabilities.”
