iPhone SE: Our first impression of the new 2022 model

So there it is, the new iPhone SE. The cheap iPhone first appeared on the market in 2016, at that time still in the guise of the iPhone 5s with the technology of the iPhone 6s. The second generation will follow in 2020, now with the body of the iPhone 8 and the processor of the iPhone 11. The SE? More or less officially still stands for “Special Edition”.

Just two years after the second generation, the latest iPhone SE (Apple website) on sale. The now third generation is externally similar to its predecessor down to the smallest detail. Again, the case of the iPhone 8 is used, meanwhile no longer necessarily the epitome of a modern smartphone look.

Will the Special Edition become a Simple Edition?

Maybe the SE in iPhone SE shouldn’t be for anymore Special Editionbut much more for Simple Edition to stand. Face ID, a frameless display, up to three cameras and a large hump on the back – you don’t get all that with the new iPhone SE. In addition to the processor, which is also supposed to improve the photo quality, there is actually only one new addition 5G. For a price of at least 519 euros you simply get a simple smartphone from Apple. Maybe it should just be in iPhone be renamed.

And even if I don’t see myself as a target group for the iPhone SE, I have to say after unpacking: The particle with its rounded corners feels really good in the hand. Due to the missing camera hump, it feels like it’s only half as thick as mine iPhone 13 Pro. And at 144 grams, the iPhone SE is a real lightweight, compared to its predecessor it has even lost a few grams.

The same processor as in the $1,249 iPhone

The iPhone SE’s strongest weapon is definitely its processor. The A15 Bionic Chip is installed, which is also used in the iPhone 13 Pro, which is more than twice as expensive. And that’s a real hit. In Geekbench, the processor achieves almost 1,700 points in single-core mode and 4,650 points in multi-score. The best Android smartphones score 1,050 and 3,350 points respectively. Although one must say that the top models from Samsung have currently been banned from the Geekbench lists due to alleged manipulation.

The target group will not be interested in these numbers anyway. The maximum performance isn’t even nearly exhausted with a little social media and a few games. Much more important: the A15 Bionic is just like the M1 processor in the iPad Air something like retirement savings. He is the insurance that the 500-euro iPhone will still be supplied with updates in years to come. The oldest device that was still equipped with iOS 15 is the iPhone 6S from 2015.

And now please name another smartphone for 500 euros, which will probably also receive a comprehensive operating system update in six years. There’s just nothing there. Because of this, the iPhone SE is perfect for all users who don’t need high-end, just an iPhone. A smartphone that they can still rely on in four or five years.
