Maintaining the 2021 trend, the Apple continued to be number one in the handset market refurbished last year. More than maintaining the position, the company achieved, in 2022, almost half (49%) of the entire market — which grew 5% as a whole over the same period, despite a 17% drop in China.

According to a survey by Counterpoint Research, if it weren’t for this drop in sales of refurbished products in the Chinese market — which is one of the largest in the world — the increase in the total number would have been even greater. A India led growth in the sector, with an increase of 19% between 2021 and 2022, followed by Latin Americacom 18%.

In terms of manufacturers, Apple once again led the way in both market share and annual growth statistics. Holding 49% of refurbished sales, the company’s global volume grew 16% in 2022, compared to 44% in 2021. Apple, according to Counterpoint, is the manufacturer that most contributes to the increase in sales of devices in that condition.

A Samsung, in turn, decreased its market share by two percentage points year-on-year. This was due to a small migration of users from Android to iOS; this trend should continue this year, affecting the sales of the south korean.

The demand for these devices comes both from new smartphone buyers (in mature markets), people switching from simple cell phones to more advanced ones, in addition to informal commerce. The offer of products comes from retailers, operators in some countries and the manufacturers themselves, who have difficulty collecting and reselling the devices.

The research also showed that consumers are preferring more advanced refurbished devices, which increased the average sale price, as well as the volumes of trade-in. In addition, demand for 5G handsets has also risen — corresponding, last year, to 13% of these devices.

Finally, the consultancy stated that operators are collecting more and more second-hand devices, as well as companies (except Apple) are facing difficulties in selling used devices. In the case of Apple, aspects such as brand value attract consumers to purchase refurbished devices, even with small aesthetic defects, for example, taking advantage of the lower cost.
