Iran Crisis: How China May Benefit From Energy Market Upheaval

by Omar El Sayed - World Editor

Oil and gas prices surged this week following U.S. And Israeli strikes on Iran, jolting energy markets and prompting the White House to consider measures to mitigate the political fallout. The price of U.S. Gasoline has risen sharply, while European natural gas prices reached their highest level since 2023, according to market analysts.

Amidst the escalating tensions, a surprising dynamic is emerging: Ukraine is now positioned as a potential key player in assisting the U.S. And its Middle Eastern allies in countering Iranian drone technology. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Thursday that the U.S. Has requested Ukraine share its expertise in defending against Iranian-made Shahed drones, the same drones Russia has extensively used in its invasion of Ukraine. Zelenskyy stated he has instructed officials to “provide the necessary means and ensure the presence of Ukrainian specialists” to aid in these efforts, according to a statement released by his office.

The request comes as countries in the Middle East, including those in the Gulf region, seek to bolster their defenses against Iranian drone attacks. Zelenskyy indicated that he has been in communication with counterparts in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait, offering “concrete steps” to help protect their military bases and civilian infrastructure. A recent Iranian drone strike killed six U.S. Soldiers in Kuwait on March 1, highlighting the urgency of the situation, according to reports.

Ukraine’s experience in combating Iranian drones has proven invaluable. Kyiv officials suggest that Ukraine has developed more cost-effective methods of intercepting drones than relying solely on expensive systems like the U.S. Patriot missile defense system, which costs approximately $4 million per interceptor. Zelenskyy has indicated a willingness to exchange interceptor drones for additional U.S. Patriot air defenses to protect against Russian ballistic missiles, signaling a potential trade-off for assistance.

The U.S. Has acknowledged Ukraine’s offer. President Donald Trump, when asked about the Ukrainian offer, stated, “I’ll take any assistance from any country.” However, Zelenskyy emphasized that any assistance would be contingent on not weakening Ukraine’s own defense capabilities and securing diplomatic gains for Kyiv.

The situation also raises concerns about potential disruptions to global energy supplies. Qatar, a major exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG), temporarily suspended operations at its Ras Laffan facility after being struck by an Iranian drone, sending shockwaves through already tight LNG markets. Qatar supplies roughly 20 percent of globally traded LNG.

Tankers are diverting away from the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for oil transport, and insurance rates are increasing, further contributing to market volatility. Iraq has begun curtailing oil output as storage capacity fills due to limited export routes. While major production facilities in the Persian Gulf remain largely intact, the logistical challenges and heightened fear are driving up prices.

The conflict’s impact extends beyond immediate energy prices. Analysts note that the crisis could divert U.S. Weapons and aid away from Ukraine, potentially exacerbating its challenges in defending against Russia’s ongoing invasion. The potential for a shortage of interceptor missiles and the possibility of Russia benefiting from rising oil prices are also significant concerns.

Despite these risks, Zelenskyy appears determined to leverage the crisis to advance Ukraine’s national interests. He has called for an complete to hostilities and safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, while simultaneously seeking to strengthen ties with key international partners.
