Iran fired on U.S. allies in the Gulf early Wednesday, sparking a major escalation that ended a monthlong lull in fighting between the United States and Iran, according to The Associated Press. The renewed violence followed a night of American bombardment that Iranian officials state included a deadly strike on a wedding party in a coastal area overlooking the Strait of Hormuz.
Regional Conflict Escalates as Iran Fires on Gulf Neighbors Following U.S. Strikes
The six-month war has roiled the global economy, driven up global energy prices, and created mounting political challenges for U.S. President Donald Trump’s Republican Party ahead of the November midterm elections. Brent crude oil, the international standard, climbed above $95, marking an increase of more than 30% since the start of the conflict.
U.S. Military Strikes and the Strait of Hormuz Standoff
The latest military flare-up began over the weekend after the U.S. military hit Iranian rocket launchers on an island in the Strait of Hormuz, asserting that Iran planned to use them to deploy mines into the vital waterway. According to Reuters, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that its latest wave of strikes targeted Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) assets, including air defense sites, radar systems, maritime assets and facilities, mine-laying capabilities, and communications sites.
President Trump told Fox News in a phone call that U.S. forces specifically waited to strike radar systems that Iran was attempting to rebuild. We waited until it was almost built and then we hit it,
Trump said. Additionally, an Axios report citing U.S. officials noted that the military attacked two Iranian government tankers during Tuesday’s operations.
While U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright reported that 17 million barrels of oil transited the Strait of Hormuz on Monday—the highest level since the war reduced flows—shipping remains severely constrained. Saudi shipping company Bahri announced that two Filipino sailors were killed in an attack late Monday while their vessel transited the strait.
Iranian Retaliation Hits U.S. Assets and Gulf Neighbors
In response to the U.S. bombardment, Iran launched retaliatory strikes across the region. Kuwait’s government communications center reported that a residential complex in Kuwait City caught fire at dawn after being struck by an Iranian drone, though the blaze was contained with no reported casualties. Bahrain, which hosts an important U.S. naval base, announced that its air defense systems intercepted incoming fire from Iran, accusing Tehran of targeting civilians. Meanwhile, Kuwait and Bahrain both confirmed they came under attack without reporting casualties.
In Iraq, where Iranian-backed proxy forces are active, Kurdistan’s Counter-Terrorism Directorate reported intercepting 10 explosives-laden drones in the Irbil area. Iranian television concurrently reported that American bases in Irbil had been targeted. Along Israel’s southern border, the Israeli military reported that Iran-backed Hezbollah fired two explosive drones at its soldiers, resulting in no casualties.
Iranian officials strongly condemned the U.S. military actions. Mohsen Rezaei, the recently appointed head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, wrote on X: You will soon see that Iran’s new strategy on the battlefield, in diplomacy, and in confronting the economic blockade will shatter your foundations.
Ebrahim Azizi, chairperson of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, also wrote on X: Make no mistake: these crimes will not go unpunished.
Wedding Party Casualties and Domestic Toll
State news agency IRNA and state TV reported that four people were killed—including two women and two children aged 4 and 16—while at least 68 others were wounded. Ahmad Nafisi, the province’s deputy governor, initially told Iranian state television that five people were killed before official tallies were updated.
Images from Iran’s semiofficial Tasnim news agency displayed several hospitalized children receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained during the bombardment. The latest casualties add to a broader toll that, according to regional reports, has left thousands dead and millions displaced since the conflict involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran began on February 28.
