Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated on Tuesday that a nuclear deal with the United States is “within reach, but only if diplomacy is given priority.” In a post on social media platform X, Araghchi emphasized a “historic opportunity” to forge an unprecedented agreement addressing mutual concerns and interests between the two nations. He similarly insisted that Iran will maintain its “fundamental convictions,” asserting that the country will never pursue nuclear weapons while also safeguarding its right to peaceful nuclear technology.
These remarks reach as Iran prepares to resume negotiations with the U.S. On Thursday in Geneva, following a previous round of discussions earlier this month. Araghchi expressed determination to achieve a “fair and equitable deal in the shortest possible time,” indicating that the upcoming talks will build on the understandings established previously.
Highlighting Iran’s commitment to sovereignty, Araghchi stated, “We have proven that we will stop at nothing to guard our sovereignty with courage. We bring the same courage to the negotiating table, where we will pursue a peaceful resolution to any differences.” His deputy, Majid Takht-Ravanchi, echoed similar sentiments, confirming Iran’s readiness to take necessary steps towards reaching an agreement with the United States.
The backdrop to the renewed negotiations includes a significant military buildup by the U.S. In the region, raising concerns about potential military action if diplomatic efforts falter. In light of these tensions, both sides appear to be navigating a precarious path towards dialogue, with the stakes of the upcoming meeting in Geneva expected to be high.
