A novelty at the Ironman 2023: Unlike before, the men’s race will no longer be held on the US island of Hawaii. SPOX explains the background.

The Ironman World Championship will take place again this year. Compared to previous years, however, there is one piquant change: the men will not hold their race in Hawaii.

The 50th US state is considered the birthplace of the “oldest triathlon in the world”. The first event dates back to 1978.

In the Ironman race, both amateurs and professionals compete in the disciplines of swimming (3.86 km), cycling (180.2 km) and running (42.195 km).

The event has been considered the ultimate in triathlon sport for years.

The men’s Ironman World Championship will take place in Nice this year.

Ironman 2023: That’s why there is no men’s race in Hawaii this year

The reason for the change is the consistently high number of participants. Last year, the event had to be split over two days. The women’s race was held on one day and the men’s on the other.

However, this idea was not effective either, as Hawaii Mayor Mitch Roth explained afterwards. “We’ve learned that more than one day of racing during Ironman week is too much for the community,” he said, referring to the logistical challenge of accommodating everyone on site.

So a new solution was needed. Those responsible finally announced this at the beginning of January. For the first time in its history, the Ironman will be divided into two events: While the women will compete as usual in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, on October 14, the men will be challenged a month earlier, on September 10, in Nice, France. In the following year there will be a change of location. This system will initially last until 2026. How things will continue after that remains unclear.
