Is boxed juice the same as soda? Nutritionist explains

It doesn’t matter if it’s a family lunch, a dinner with friends or a romantic date: boxed juice and soda are always on the agenda in discussions.

This is where the question arises, especially for those who value maintaining a healthy lifestyle: is boxed juice a better option than soda?

“In general, boxed juice presents itself as a healthier option compared to soft drinks, as it contains natural vitamins from fruits. However, excessive consumption of any sugary drink should be done in moderation”, explains nutritionist Marcella Garcez.

According to the nutritionist, boxed juices contain fruit concentrates, water, sugar and may contain additives, such as preservatives and flavorings. Soft drinks, in turn, contain carbonated water, high-fructose corn syrup, colorings, flavorings and preservatives.

“As for processing, boxed juice comes from a concentration process, where water is removed from the juice to create a concentrate. Which makes transportation easier. Thus, before being consumed, water can be added. Soda comes from carbonating water, adding high-fructose corn syrup and other ingredients to add flavor and color,” added Garcez.

Excessive sugar consumption is directly linked to serious health problems. Eating a lot of sweets and carbohydrates, for example, can increase the chance of developing diabetes, cancer, obesity, among others.

According to experts, sugar has addictive properties and triggers a series of reactions in the human body. In addition to causing allergies, ingesting the substance in excess can deactivate the immune system and make the individual more prone to acquiring infections Westend61/ Getty Images

Excess sugar in the body causes blood sugar levels to spike and, after a while, to plummet. Furthermore, the body will ask for more and if it doesn’t get it, it will start sending withdrawal signals. Consequently, the individual enters a compulsory cycle of hunger and the desire for sweets increases wundervisuals/ Getty Images
