Using e-cigarettes to quit smoking, is it a good idea? Is there less risk for the heart if you vape instead of smoking cigarettes?

Researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University’s Institute of Sport are investigating the issue in a study that compares the blood vessels of participants who vape to those of people who smoke traditional cigarettes and other who don’t smoke at all.

The embryonic results they have obtained so far show that vascular function is as impaired in vapers as in smokers.

“The electronic cigarette does not burn nicotine, it is perhaps better compared to traditional cigarettes, and it can be a transition tool for those who want to stop smoking completely. On the other hand, that does not mean that it is good for health, especially if people continue to vape over a very long term,” says researcher Maxime Boidin, who is participating in this study.

The latter, however, does not yet have a definitive answer as to what causes this deterioration among vapers.

Electronic cigarettes contain hundreds of substances, such as metal, that could impact inflammation.

“There is not only nicotine in an electronic cigarette,” maintains Mr. Boidin. The different flavors would have an impact on inflammation, and in fact, inflammation could cause vascular dysfunction.

The results of this study should be published by the end of 2024.
