The head of this body, Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko, mentioned this Friday that “there is only a 2% chance that the Island Games will take place in Madagascar…”. The world of Malagasy sport, in general, and the athletes as well as the federations concerned, in particular, are also fed up with the passivity of the State less than four months before the games (August 25 to September 3). The minister finally had to answer questions from journalists on the slow-motion preparation of the JIOI, unprecedented in history. “The Island Games will indeed take place. The athletes have already started their preparation and will continue the regrouping… Others will benefit from internships abroad, the regrouping of the locals will also be launched”, declared Minister Resampa on Saturday at the Barea stadium in Mahamasina, without specifying a date or details. Incoherent, the latter added that the time remaining before the event is sufficient to prepare the games. “I promise you 98% not to say 100% that the Games will take place and we will organize them well for the pride of the country.” The logo, for which the competition was officially launched in June 2022, will be presented, the rehabilitation work on the competition sites will soon be launched and this work will be completed before the Games.
Avoid humiliation
The first head of Malagasy sport stressed that “he is in contact with the president of the International Games Council as well as the heads of the other islands and they will come to Madagascar to attend the meeting from May 15… An opportunity to determine definitely the athlete accommodation sites. Certainly there will be improvements, but the timetable is already established. Also according to the Minister, “his team meets twice a week, but the Olympic Committee did not attend the meetings, the reason why he is not aware of the progress of the preparation”. Asked about the slow regrouping of athletes and the precision on the start date of site rehabilitation works, including athletics tracks, the swimming pool, etc., Haja Resampa replied: “Several athletes are regrouping in China, wrestling experts are within our walls… We will of course support the federations, we will do our best with the means we have… As for the infrastructure, the companies concerned will have to complete the work on time.” Concerning the doubts on the budget, he reassured always without precision “how do you want us to prepare these games when there is no budget planned, for but it is necessary to arrange well…”. The declarations follow one another and resemble each other, more than one is eager for the concretization to confirm them and avoid humiliation.
