A war monitor said Israel’s strikes in Syria on Sunday morning targeted at least two locations in Damascus province including a weapons depot, while state media said a soldier was wounded in the attack.

Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes against targets in Syria since the civil war broke out in 2011, mainly targeting Iran-backed forces including militants from Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement as well as Syrian army positions.

The attacks have increased since Israel’s war with the Palestinian militant group Hamas, an ally of Hezbollah, began on October 7.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the “Israeli missiles” targeted weapons depots belonging to the Syrian military and used by Hezbollah in the Qalamun mountains in Damascus province.

Other locations near an army battalion in the same area were also targeted, the UK-based Observatory added, reporting a fire at one of the locations.

State news agency SANA, carrying a statement from a military source, said “Israel’s enemies launched airstrikes… targeting a number of points in the southern region”, without specifying their locations.

It said a soldier was injured in the attack and reported “material losses”, adding an air defense system shot down several missiles.

Earlier this month, an Israeli strike killed an Iranian Revolutionary Guard and two other people in Banias on Syria’s Mediterranean coast, according to reports, in the third consecutive day of Israeli strikes in the country.

This week, the Israeli army said it had struck some 4,500 Hezbollah targets in Lebanon and Syria over the past five months.

Israel rarely comments on individual attacks but has repeatedly said it will not allow Iran to expand its presence in Syria. (AFP/Z-3)
