Israeli Airstrike on Southern Lebanon Kills Seven Amid Intensifying Attacks

An Israeli airstrike on southern Lebanon killed seven people and wounded three early Saturday, marking one of the deadliest attacks since a precarious truce between Israel and Hezbollah went into effect on June 20, according to reports by NBC News. The airstrike targeted a home on the edge of the village of Ansar and paramedics were still searching through the rubble.

A Pact Fractured by Fire

A “framework agreement” was made public by the Lebanese government and Israel on June 26, establishing a schedule for Israeli troops to pull back from southern Lebanon in return for the Iran-supported Hezbollah militant faction giving up its weapons. It also envisions steps toward an eventual peace agreement between the two countries. Hezbollah has refused direct talks and wasn’t party to the deal.

Hezbollah has accused the Lebanese government of making too many concessions without guaranteeing an Israeli withdrawal. At the same time, the Israel Defense Forces have pressed forward with near-daily strikes on the territory located north of the Litani River, which has served as an unofficial line in Lebanon while Israeli forces occupy vast expanses to the south.

Strikes Hit Strategic Heights

According to NBC News, Saturday’s bombardment also targeted the vital Ali Taher hill—which commands views of key pathways to the southern city of Nabatiyeh as well as portions of the city itself—in addition to the deadly raid in Ansar.

Fighting began on March 2 when Hezbollah launched cross-border rockets two days following U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran, and the casualty count from the conflict has remained elevated since then. Israeli military operations in Lebanon have claimed the lives of over 4,000 individuals over that timeframe, among them numerous civilians. On the Israeli side, about 40 soldiers and three civilians — including a military contractor — have been killed.

Rome Negotiations

Seven diplomatic sessions have been conducted between Lebanon and Israel, with the most recent meeting occurring in Rome earlier this month.
