Israelis have been protesting against Netanyahu’s right-wing religious government for months. The colors of the blue and white national flag often marked the streets in large parts of the country. First because of a controversial judicial reform, but now also because of the increasing violence against the Arab population.

Tens of thousands of Israelis have demonstrated nationwide against the policies of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing religious government. In several cities, they paraded through the streets with blue and white national flags and placards. The focus of the protests this week was, among other things, the increase in violence in the Arab sector and a crucial vote in parliament in the coming week.

According to media reports, 100 people from the Arab population have been killed in Israel since the beginning of the year – almost three times as many as in the same period in 2022. The police under Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir are accused of not taking enough action against the wave of violence. Signs at the protests read: “Ben-Gvir you are overwhelmed. Resign!”

Judicial reform aims to weaken the Supreme Court

There have been regular anti-government demonstrations in Israel since the beginning of the year. Netanyahu’s coalition wants to specifically weaken the supreme court with a judicial reform. She accuses him of excessive interference in political decisions. Critics see the separation of powers in danger and warn of a national crisis. Netanyahu suspended the plans in March after massive pressure. Negotiations between the government and the opposition have so far remained without agreement.

A central part of the comprehensive legislative proposal is a change in the judge selection committee. On Wednesday, Parliament will vote on two representatives of the nine-member body. Traditionally, one of the two comes from the opposition. However, several government MPs called for both seats to be given to the coalition. Such a step could fuel the protests in the country massively again. Organizers said the government would be surprised “by the scale and intensity.” The opposition threatened to halt negotiations on a compromise.
