(CNN) – Israel claimed responsibility for the killing of a senior leader in the Lebanese Hezbollah group, Wissam Tawil, according to Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz, in an interview with Israeli Channel 14, on Monday.
A Lebanese security source confirmed to CNN that Tawil, a senior commander in Hezbollah’s Radwan Brigade, was killed in an Israeli drone strike on his car in southern Lebanon.
Katz said in the interview: “As for the strike in southern Lebanon, we have taken responsibility, and this is part of our war,” and added: “We are targeting Hezbollah elements and the infrastructure and systems they were able to put in place to deter Israel.”
He continued: “We are making them pay the price. We did not set our goal to thwart 150,000 missiles. We set a goal to restore security to the residents of the north and south and to the State of Israel.”
The Israeli Foreign Minister also reiterated that his country did not claim responsibility for the explosion that occurred last week in southern Beirut, which led to the killing of Saleh Al-Arouri, deputy head of the Hamas political bureau.
It is noteworthy that “Hezbollah” issued a statement, which was reported by the Lebanese National News Agency and the party’s “Al-Manar” channel, in which it said: “With greater pride and honor, the Islamic Resistance mourns the martyr, Mujahid Commander Wissam Hassan Tawil (Hajj Jawad) from the town of Khirbet Salam in southern Lebanon. He rose as a martyr on the road to Jerusalem,” the statement stated.
Earlier, Monday, the Israeli army spokesman, Avichay Adraee, said in a post on his account on the “X” platform, previously Twitter, that “Israeli warplanes raided Hezbollah’s terrorist infrastructure inside Lebanon, in addition to military sites from which the organization’s saboteurs operated.” The terrorist, and a short while ago, an anti-armor shell was fired towards the city of Kiryat Shmona, where the forces are responding towards areas in southern Lebanon.”
