Tel Aviv: There is heavy public anger against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his party in Israel in the event that Hamas could not rescue the Israeli citizens held hostage. Channel 12 has released a survey report revealing this. According to the survey, Netanyahu’s Likud party, which currently has 32 seats, will fall to 17 seats. Meanwhile, National Unity led by Benny Gatz will increase from the current 12 seats to 36, the survey said.

Most Israelis believe that Netanyahu has failed to deal with the Hamas onslaught. In an opinion poll conducted earlier by Channel 13 Television, 76 percent of people were of the opinion that the Prime Minister should resign. After the war, 67 percent of the people were of the opinion that elections should be held soon. 44 percent rated the attack by Hamas as a direct defeat for Netanyahu.

In an opinion poll conducted by Maariv newspaper, 66 percent of Israeli citizens spoke against Netanyahu. 21% wanted Netanyahu to remain prime minister after the war. But 13 percent had no opinion. If the election were held this time, Netanyahu’s Likud party would lose a third of its seats, while main rival Benny Gantz’s Central National Unity Party would gain a third, the survey found.

Meanwhile, opposition leader Yair Lapid also toughened his stance against Netanyahu. Parliamentary opposition leader Yair Lapid said he would join a right-wing Israeli government if Netanyahu and his hard-line allies were excluded. In an interview with Channel 12 Network, he said that Israel has lost faith in the prime minister.

“We cannot allow a protracted war with a prime minister who is not trusted by the public. “Netanyahu must go now,” Lapid said. But the Likud party accused Lapid of playing wartime politics and trying to replace Netanyahu with a government that would establish a Palestinian state.

Public anger is rising over the killing of Israeli citizens in the war against Hamas. Relatives of Hamas hostages had rallied to the Israeli prime minister’s office. Hundreds of people participated in the rally which reached the Prime Minister’s office after 63 km. The protesters demanded the speedy release of those held captive by Hamas. About 240 people were taken prisoner through the Hamas operation Tufan al-Aqsa, which was launched on October 7. Some of them have been released earlier, but many are still in prison. More than 1400 Israelis were killed in the Hamas attack.

A massive protest rally was also held in front of Netanyahu’s residence demanding his resignation. Thousands of people took part in the protest in front of the residence on Jerusalem’s Assa Street. In addition to Jerusalem, anti-government protests are also strong in the cities of Tel Aviv, Haifa, Beersheba and Eilat. Protesters are also demanding a ceasefire with Hamas to return the hostages. People took to the streets in Tel Aviv’s Kabots, pointing out that it was the Israeli government’s fault that the citizens held hostage by Hamas could not be released.

An Israeli cabinet minister who was visiting a hospital where victims of Hamas attacks have been admitted was blocked by people at the hospital’s visitors’ entrance. One person also spilled coffee on another minister’s bodyguards. People ridiculed another minister who came to comfort him as a traitor and a traitor. Top-selling daily Yedioth Ahronoth came out with the headline ‘October 2023 Failure’. The newspaper gave this headline to commemorate Israel’s failure to anticipate a twin Egyptian and Syrian attack in October 1973. This failure eventually led to the resignation of then Prime Minister Golda Meir.

Busy with talks with top officials and foreign representatives, Netanyahu has limited his meetings with the public. He also met with the relatives of 200 people held hostage by Hamas without the presence of cameras. Netanyahu’s wife also visited a family. More than 11,000 people have been killed so far in Israel’s attack on Gaza after the Hamas attack.
