At a press point in Quilpué, the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric, announced the decree of national mourning for two days starting this Monday. The head of state also expressed that this “is the greatest tragedy that we have experienced as a country since the earthquake of February 27, 2010,” which caused the death of 550 people.
“It is the entire Chile that suffers and mourns our dead,” he emphasized.
The President also highlighted that now “one of the most pressing emergencies is to recover the bodies of people who have died”, a figure that officially, at the close of this edition (zero hour) reaches 112 people.
Boric added that “the delivery of these figures must be extremely careful,” so the information will be centralized to “provide certainty to the entire population.”
“I have spoken directly with the director of the SML, Dr. Marisol Prado, because one of the most pressing emergencies is to recover the bodies of people who have died. This is a priority and is addressed with a sense of urgency, because we know the anguish and the terrible and lacerating pain that family members, loved ones, and all those who in the rescue process of debris removal have to encounter the body of a deceased person.”
Following the above, President Boric announced that “from now on I have arranged that the only official spokesperson to provide updates on death tolls will be carried out by Dr. Marisol Prado of the SML, no one else. It is important to centralize this information and provide certainty and certainty to the entire population regarding this issue.”
“I have instructed to speed up this process, including reinforcing the SML with brigades from other regions, also with the joint work of the Homicide Brigade of the PDI, Labocar of Carabineros, the Ministry of Justice and the Regional Prosecutor’s Office so that slow down the procedures. They have to be accelerated, we are in an emergency situation, so we have to act with emergency criteria,” he asserted.
Finally, the President told the community that “you will not be alone, that the Government, the State and the solidarity of Chileans, which is always present in these difficult times, will be with you. Once again, we are going to stand up.”
