As intense summer heatwaves sweep across Italy, vehicle owners are facing an unexpected and costly threat. According to recent warnings issued by Federcarrozzieri, the Italian association of auto body repair shops, extreme temperatures are wreaking havoc on automobiles parked and driven across the country. While drivers often focus on personal comfort during scorching weather, soaring environmental conditions are placing severe thermal and mechanical stress on vital car components—with repair bills in the most extreme instances climbing past 16mila euro.

From degraded rubber components to overheated mechanical parts and warped interior cabins, prolonged exposure to high temperatures is pushing vehicles past their normal operational limits.

How Extreme Heat Damages Key Car Components

The primary point of contact with the environment bears some of the heaviest burdens during a heatwave. Asphalt temperatures in Italy can easily surpass 60 degrees Celsius on the hottest summer days, subjecting vehicle tires to intense friction and thermal stress. This excessive heat accelerates tread wear, diminishes road grip, and causes the air trapped inside the tires to expand. Consequently, tire pressure rises sharply, significantly elevating the risk of structural damage or sudden blowouts. According to Federcarrozzieri estimates, replacing a damaged tire typically costs between 50 and 150 euros, including labor.

Vehicle batteries are equally vulnerable. Elevated outdoor temperatures accelerate the self-discharge process, deplete fluid levels through evaporation, and degrade overall battery efficiency. Replacing an exhausted battery generally ranges from 100 to 250 euros, including professional installation. Meanwhile, the engine compartment faces severe risks from prolonged thermal exposure. High ambient temperatures strain cooling systems and alter the viscosity of lubricating oil, which diminishes its protective effectiveness.

Thermal and mechanical stress can cause metal engine parts to expand abnormally, altering clearance tolerances and accelerating mechanical wear. In severe cases, this stress leads to blown head gaskets, engine seizure, and sudden vehicle breakdowns. Rebuilding or replacing a severely damaged engine can cost anywhere from 2.500 e 8mila euro, depending on the specific mechanical work required, vehicle model, and replacement parts used.

Interior Degradation and Exterior Wear

Beyond the mechanical and electrical systems, the vehicle’s interior and exterior surfaces suffer extensively under relentless sunshine. When left parked in direct sunlight, an automobile’s cabin can transform into a furnace, with internal temperatures climbing close to 70 degrees Celsius. This extreme greenhouse effect accelerates the deterioration of plastic and polymer components, leading to dashboard cracking, loss of structural integrity in synthetic materials, and premature fading or aging of seat upholstery and trim. Furthermore, extreme heat can trigger the release of volatile organic compounds from synthetic materials, while digital dashboard displays and sensitive onboard electronics face heightened risks of thermal malfunction.
