A glass sculpture and medals have been stolen from a memorial display case at Manchesterplatz in Munich dedicated to the 23 victims of the 1958 Munich air disaster, bbc.co.uk reported. Munich Police stated the glass was smashed with a stone during daylight hours on Monday, 26 October.
The Theft at Manchesterplatz
The incident occurred between 08:00 and 13:00 local time on October 26, according to Munich Police statements provided to German media. The targeted display case sits at Manchesterplatz in Munich, the exact site where the plane crashed on take-off on 6 February 1958 after refueling on its return from a European Cup match in Belgrade. The crash claimed 23 lives, including eight Manchester United players.

Mark Salzmann, chairman of Red Docs Munich—a Bayern Munich supporters’ group that helps care for the memorial—stated that his mother discovered the damage while driving past. Among the stolen objects was a unique glass sculpture originally presented to Munich’s former mayor, Dieter Reiter. Salzmann explained that the group regularly collects tributes left by visitors from around the world and places items inside the display case.
Immediate Response and Community Solidarity
The Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation (MMMF) expressed deep sorrow over the breach. Ifty Ahmed, chair of the foundation, noted that the theft inflicted emotional distress on the families of those lost. They don’t understand the damage that they’ve caused,
Ahmed told bbc.co.uk, adding that the memorial serves as a vital solace for bereaved relatives. And whatever they’ve taken from inside the showcase, they haven’t taken our memories.
Repair work commenced rapidly. Ahmed confirmed that Manchester United offered to cover repair costs, but the foundation chose to fund the fixes independently. The broken glass of the display case was replaced on the exact same day of the incident. Furthermore, supporters of Liverpool, Manchester City, and Leeds sent messages of support to the foundation.

The memorial case itself was added to Manchesterplatz in 2020 and officially inaugurated in 2023, following the installation of the original memorial stone in 2004. In February, approximately 1,500 attendees from across the globe gathered at the site for the annual remembrance service. Salzmann emphasized that the outpouring of global support demonstrates the enduring connection between Manchester and Munich.
