The decline in smartphone sales continues. Picture: Bing.

In this difficult context, some smartphone manufacturers managed to limit breakage in the first quarter of 2023 by trying to adapt to new market realities. Apple, for example, only fell by around 2% over one year and saw its market share increase to 20.5%. Samsung makes a face, according to the IDC instituteā€¦

Still number one, Samsung must see a decline of 18.9% of its shipments for 22.5% of the cake now. Xiaomi even fell by 23.5%, for 11.4% market share. His compatriot Oppo is doing better with a decline of 6.7% for 10.2% of device sales. It must be said that his Find N2 Flip seems to seduce terribly!

A global decline

Global smartphone shipments fell 14.6% year-over-year to 268.6 million units in the first quarter of 2023, according to preliminary data from the Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker from the International Data Corporation (IDC). This is the seventh consecutive quarter of decline.

Although the decline is larger than the 12.7% predicted by IDC, the results are not surprising as the market continues to struggle with tepid demand, inflation and economic uncertainty. Inventories remained high in all regions, but contracted six months on the back of reduced shipments and intense promotional activities.

New trends?

According to a IDC communique, almost all regions saw a double-digit decline in the first quarter of 2023. China recorded a decline of almost 12%, which was slightly higher than expected despite the recent reopening of the market. Consumers are prioritizing travel and entertainment over smartphones, and uncertainty continues, weighing on consumer sentiment, IDC said.

Developed markets like the United States and Western Europe fared better than the others with declines of 11.5% and 9.4% respectively. Emerging markets such as Asia-Pacific, Central and Eastern Europe and the Middle East and Africa region saw larger declines, in the range of 17-20%.
