Jacob Luna Injured in West Side Shootout After Firing at SAPD Officers

A West Side surveillance operation ended in a multi-vehicle collision, a barrage of gunfire, and a foot chase when a 31-year-old man opened fire on four undercover San Antonio police officers. The confrontation unfolded as officers tracked Jacob Rigo Luna due to an active felony drug warrant, culminating near Marbach Road and Horal Drive.

Police Chief Jesse Salame stated during a news conference that detectives and officers initially trailed Luna to a local hotel and gas station to verify it was the suspect the officers were looking for. As the surveillance vehicles followed, Luna realized he was being followed. He waved his gun out the vehicle’s window and began firing at the undercover officers.

Undercover Operatives Return Fire During West Side Pursuit

All four undercover officers returned fire as the suspect vehicle maneuvered through West Side traffic. The preliminary report released by the San Antonio Police Department identifies the officers involved: Officer A. Espinoza (#1172) with eight years of service, Detective S. Elderkin (#2025) with eight years of service, Officer J. Torres-Rosado (#1149) with nine years of service, and Detective A. Vargas (#2138) with 10 years of service.

During the exchange of shots, Luna attempted to evade capture by turning his vehicle around. The driving caused multiple traffic collisions, including striking another vehicle before slamming into a tree near a Burger King restaurant. Salame said there were a couple other vehicles caught in the crossfire, though no bystanders sustained injuries.

Following the crash, Luna abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. He collapsed a short distance away after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. Officers took him into custody at the scene around 6:15 p.m. near the 1700 block of Horal Drive, recovering a handgun from inside the wrecked automobile.

Hospitalization and Subsequent Criminal Charges

Emergency medical personnel transported Luna to a local hospital in critical condition. Police later confirmed that he is expected to survive his injuries. Authorities booked him on three criminal offenses: two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and a single charge of drug possession.

One passenger was taken into custody, and another got away while SAPD chased Luna down.

Per standard department policy, all four officers who discharged their weapons were placed on administrative leave while separate investigations are conducted by the SAPD shooting team and the internal affairs unit.

Community Concerns Over Armed Resistance

Johnny Perez, president of the San Antonio Police Officers Association, addressed the frequency of armed confrontations. The suspect felt like it was okay to shoot at the police officers when they were following them. I think it’s just something that is concerning to me, Perez said. We have our officers going after wanted people that are committing crimes that are out on the streets and they’re not in jail for whatever reason. We just hope that the community’s safe.

Local residents and workers expressed resignation regarding the recurrent violence in the neighborhood. Madison Carrier, who works near the site of the shootout, noted that violent incidents have become an accepted part of daily life in that section of the city.

Misty Spears defended the department’s handling of the aftermath, noting that administrative leave is a necessary protocol while investigations are underway.
