Eight months after the December 2025 fatal stabbing of legendary director Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner in Brentwood, their eldest son, Jake Reiner, has broken his silence. In his first sit-down interview, Jake Reiner discussed discovering the tragedy, his brother Nick Reiner’s arrest, and navigating life with his sister Romy.
The Phone Call and the Shocking Arrival at the Childhood Home
The tragedy unfolded on Dec. 14, 2025, when Rob and Michele Reiner were found stabbed to death at their home in Brentwood, Los Angeles. At the time, Jake Reiner was at Union Station in Downtown Los Angeles attending a celebration of life event for a high school friend.
His younger sister, Romy Reiner, attempted to reach him by phone.
Having worked as a local news reporter on California’s Central Coast and in Los Angeles for a decade, Jake Reiner was no stranger to covering crime scenes. But walking up to his own family property changed everything.
Navigating Anger, Legal Proceedings, and Family Shatters
In the new interview shared by KABC-TV and highlighted across media reports, Jake Reiner reflected on the profound emotional toll of the past eight months. Nobody really understands what it’s like to go through something like that until you’re living it,
he said, characterizing the entire experience as a living nightmare.
“It’s been eight months. It feels like eight years at the same time. And it also feels like eight minutes because every moment that I wake up, I’m reminded of my reality.”

That reality includes the arrest and indictment of his 32-year-old brother, Nick Reiner. Nick Reiner has been charged with two counts of murder, with prosecutors adding special circumstance allegations of multiple murders and murder by means of lying in wait. He has pleaded not guilty. If convicted, Nick Reiner potentially faces life in prison without parole or the death penalty.
Addressing the collapse of their family structure, Jake Reiner noted that he and his 28-year-old sister, Romy, are left to carry forward alone. I physically lost my parents. And then Nick was arrested. … And now it’s me and Romy,
he explained.
“For me, it manifests into anger. It manifests into rage, into how unfair this was, how I didn’t get a say in what happened. I didn’t get to stop it from happening. I had no choice in the matter. I just have to accept the reality of it. And to me, that is just one of the most infuriating parts of all of this.”

Both Jake and Romy recently testified before the Los Angeles grand jury that formally indicted their brother. A pre-trial hearing for the murder case is scheduled for September 15. Meanwhile, trustees have argued that Nick Reiner should not access a trust fund due to the slayer statute.
Honoring Rob and Michele Reiner Through Public Legacy
Despite the immense grief, Jake Reiner emphasizes that his parents provided all three of their children with unconditional love.
He shared that his parents never stopped trying to help Nick, though he noted he has not spoken with his brother since the tragedy.
To help keep their parents’ memory alive, Jake and Romy made a public appearance on August 2 at Dodger Stadium, participating in a ceremonial first pitch. Rob Reiner was a devoted Dodgers fan who held season tickets and frequently attended multiple games a week with his family.
Jake Reiner is also channeling his energy into philanthropy supported by his late parents. He is working alongside the Children’s Institute, an organization serving roughly 30,000 children and families annually with early education and support programs, where his aunt Martine Singer serves as president and CEO.
