The Flemish Minister-President, Jan Jambon, declared himself a candidate for his own succession at the head of the Flemish government on Sunday after the elections on June 9.
Mr. Jambon (N-VA) has led the Flemish government since October 2019, relying on a coalition made up of the nationalists, the Open Vld and the CD&V.
This week, he was proposed by the N-VA electoral college as head of the party list in Antwerp for the Flemish parliament vote. It is now up to the party council to confirm this choice.
Mr. Jambon said on Sunday on the political show De Zevende Dag on public channel VRT that it was an “honor” to lead the Flemish government as a Flemish nationalist. He said he was ready to take on a second term.
“If the N-VA is called to board the next Flemish government and it is the most important party, then I am ready to fulfill this mandate,” he said.

According to the latest polls, however, it is Vlaams Belang – credited last month with 23.3% of voting intentions – that would take the initiative to form a new government team after the elections. The N-VA would only be the second party in Flanders, but some suspect the nationalists of being ready to discuss with the far-right party.
“I could see Jan Jambon saying at some point: ok, then we should have a government with Vlaams Belang,” declared this weekend the Federal Minister for Development Cooperation and head of the Vooruit regional list in Antwerp, Caroline Gennez, to the newspaper ‘Gazet van Antwerpen’.
“We have always said that the ball will be in the court of Vlaams Belang,” Mr. Jambon underlined on Sunday.

He admitted seeing “a number of changes that go in the right direction” in the leader of Vlaams Belang. But “as the party presents itself today”, it remains “no pasarán”, said the minister-president.
He also denounced the personal attacks of Vlaams Belang against the N-VA. “If you want to perform a seduction dance, you shouldn’t attack so hard all the time,” he said.
