January 6 Committee Releases Final Report on Efforts to Cancel 2020 Election

The committee released more than 40 transcripts of witness testimony Wednesday and Thursday, which showed nearly two dozen witnesses invoking their Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. Others, as well as attachments, will be published before the end of the year.

Topics in the report’s chapter include Mr. Trump’s lies about the election, the creation of bogus pro-Trump voter lists in states won by President Biden, and the former president’s pressure campaign against officials of State, the Department of Justice and former Vice President Mike Pence. . The committee’s report documents how Mr. Trump summoned a crowd of his supporters to Washington, then did nothing to stop them as they attacked the Capitol for more than three hours.

The report also contains the committee’s legislative recommendations, which seek to prevent future presidents from attempting a similar plot. The panel has already approved the overhaul of the Voter Count Act, the law that Mr. Trump and his allies tried to exploit on Jan. 6 to try to cling to power. The House is expected to give final approval to the overhaul on Friday.

The committee’s report is the result of an 18-month investigation, which included more than 1,000 witness interviews and a review of more than a million pages of documents, obtained after the committee issued more than 100 subpoenas to appear.

The nine-member panel was made up of seven Democrats and two Republicans.

Rep. Bennie Thompson, Democrat of Mississippi and chair of the committee, and Rep. Liz Cheney, Republican of Wyoming and vice chair of the committee, wrote ahead of the report.
