Japan asks for emergency UN Security Council meeting over North Korean missile launch

The Japanese authorities appealed to the UN Security Council to hold an emergency meeting about the launch of missiles by the DPRK. Today, February 20, two ballistic missiles were launched, February 18 – one intercontinental ballistic missile.

“Following the launch of an intercontinental-class missile the day before yesterday, now is the launch of ballistic missiles, so we requested an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council. It is necessary to continue gathering information, remain vigilant and deepen interaction with the United States and South Korea,” said Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida (quoted from NHK).

North Korea has confirmed conducting exercises using multiple launch rocket systems. The flight altitude of the first missile was 100 km, the range – 400 km, the second – 50 and 350 km, respectively. They fell outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

Tokyo protested to Pyongyang over the missile launch. Seoul has imposed sanctions on four individuals and five institutions that South Korea believes are involved in its nuclear and missile development programs and are helping the country circumvent sanctions.
