On January 18, the Tokyo High Court upheld the acquittal of a number of former leaders of Tokyo Electric Power Co.TEPCO) allegedly failed to prevent the incident radioactive leak 2011 at a nuclear power plant Fukushima No. 1.

The decision was made after the Tokyo District Court in 2019 ruled that former TEPCO President Tsunehisa Katsumata, and former Vice Presidents Sakae Muto and Ichiro Takekuro could not have foreseen the scale of the battle. tsunami damaged the main cooling functions at the Daiichi nuclear power plant and caused a reactor core meltdown.

According to the ruling, the three defendants were exonerated from the charge of negligence resulting in death and injury.

In 2013, prosecutors decided not to criminally prosecute the three. Later, however, an investigation and prosecution committee, consisting of civilian members, reviewed the case and called for prosecution of the defendants.

In 2016, the former leaders were indicted for allegedly failing to take measures to deal with the tsunami, resulting in 44 deaths during the evacuation or later in emergency shelters.

In September 2019, the Tokyo District Court acquitted the three defendants. The lawyers decided to appeal to the High Court.
