‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ pays tribute to Lance Reddick in its season finale

The first season of ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ has come to an end. The series, based on the books by Rick Riordan, premiered on December 19 and after eight episodes broadcast weekly, we reached the outcome of the first volume.

The episode that closes the season is titled ‘The Prophecy Comes True’ and it culminates the first leg of Percy, Annabeth and Grover’s journey to prevent the war between the gods of Olympus. In this chapter we finally meet Zeus, played by Lance Reddick, an actor who died in March 2023.

In the season finale, Zeus makes his grand entrance in a scene in which Percy (Walker Scobell) stars in a long dialectical confrontation with the supreme god atop Olympus. Reddick’s Zeus appears as a man in a suit, not unlike Charon, his ‘John Wick’ character.

The episode ends with a tribute to Reddick in the form of an on-screen message that reads “Love, in memory of Lance Reddick.” It can be seen just before the main credits. Zeus is one of the last roles of the prolific actor, who still has several films pending release, such as ‘Shirley’, ‘Apteros’, ‘St. Sebastian’ and ‘Ballerina’, the spin-off of ‘John Wick’ starring Ana de Armas.

Perhaps also as a tribute and claim, Disney+ has placed the actor as Zeus in the main photo that appears in the carousel within the streaming service’s menu, where the latest news and featured titles are announced.

Season 2?

With the first season of ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ complete, the question is: will there be more? The series premiered in December with good numbers (13.3 million views in its first week) and has had a fairly positive reception from fans. However, Disney+ has not yet officially announced a second season.

Of course, the author of the novels, Rick Riordan, who is also in charge of the series, has been optimistic in interviews about a possible second installment. In December he revealed during Josh Horowitz’s popular podcast, Happy Sad Confused, that he was already preparing the second season, doing preliminary writing work, in case it received the green light. Cross our fingers.
