Jeju Solar Power Plant Suspension Against Electricity Overproduction

A situation occurred where the operation of the solar power plant in Jeju was stopped again due to excessive power production.

According to the Jeju Headquarters of the Korea Power Exchange and Jeju Island on the 28th, output control measures were implemented for 101 public solar power plants and 88 private power plants in the province for 4 hours from 11 am to 3 pm the previous day.

The capacity of the solar power plant, which production was stopped on that day, is 90MW.

This is 18.3% of the total installed capacity of 491.8MW of solar power plants operating in Jeju as of the end of last month.

An official from the Korea Power Exchange said, “The day before (27th), due to the good midday weather, the solar power plant produced more electricity than the amount used, and there were concerns about a power outage.”

Currently, electricity is being produced in excess of renewable energy power generation facilities, but output control measures are being implemented as the excess electricity cannot be processed.

If excess electricity flows into the power grid as it is, an overload may occur in the power grid and, in severe cases, a power outage may occur.

The technology for storing excess power is not currently commercially available.

Previously, on October 17 and last year, the output control of solar power plants in the province was also implemented.

The installed capacity of the solar power plant, which was stopped at that time, was 19.6 MW and 20 MW, respectively, and this is the first time that a solar power plant has ceased operation in a pile like this.
