The owner of OGC Nice, Briton Jim Ratcliffe, founder and chairman of chemicals giant Ineos Group, has suffered a decline in his fortunes over the past year. According to recent data from Forbesit went from 22.9 billion dollars in 2023 (21.1 billion euros) to 16.5 billion dollars estimated in 2024 (15.2 billion euros), a loss of 6.4 billion dollars (5.9 billion euros).
The man behind the petrochemical group Ineos
Known for his successes in the chemical industry, Ratcliffe built his empire from scratch, starting his career as a chemical engineer before founding Ineos Group. The London-based company, valued at $68 billion in revenue in 2022, is a major player in the production of a variety of chemicals, from synthetic oils to plastics to solvents used in the manufacture of insulin and antibiotics .

Ineos’ meteoric rise has been marked by a series of strategic acquisitions, including the purchase of BP’s petrochemical assets and partnerships with companies such as Sinopec. In 2023, the company expanded its operations by acquiring oil and gas assets in the United States, thereby consolidating its position in the global energy market.
A fortune estimated on the decline but which remains on high standards
Apart from his business interests, Ratcliffe has also invested in sport in cycling, Formula 1, sailing, rugby, running as well as football. The Ineos group has been behind the GYM takeover since the summer of 2019 and recently, the British businessman acquired a 28% stake in the Manchester United club for $1.5 billion. Even declining and fluctuating, his fortune remains at high levels for him, on par with what it was in 2018 or 2022.
