Joan Duru Qualifies for Paris Olympics: ISA Worlds Highlight and Olympic Surfing News

One day before the ISA Worlds in Puerto Rico, Joan Duru won her ticket to the Paris Olympics, bringing the number of surfers qualified for Teahupoo to four at the end of August. The Landais joined Kauli Vaast, Johanne Defay and Vahine Fierro.

The last nominative sesame chose its camp this Saturday in Arecibo between Duru and Marco Mignot. The two Frenchmen were opposed in the first series of round 6, with Gabriel Medina. The Brazilian flew through the heat (17.06). Mignot held his qualification for the next round when the ghost of Duru wandered into the line-up without inspiration. And then, during the last three minutes, the surfer from Ondres woke up and turned the tide with two beautiful waves, including a right-hander in the final seconds, a 6.23 which was added to his 7, 23. The 2021 ISA world champion finished with a total of 13.46 and stole the show from Mignot, who was narrowly beaten (13.10).

Returned to the repechage, the latter definitely saw his hopes disappear when he finished 3rd in the 10th repechage series (10.13) against the incredible Yago Dora (18.46) and the Moroccan Ramzi Boukhiam (10. 30). Joan Duru, who before the competition told us that he wanted to end his career with the Paris Olympics, will be one of the surfers capable of winning a medal. In 2017, when he was on the pro circuit, he reached the quarter-finals of the Tahiti Pro.

The Blues, if they finish first in the men’s ranking of nations, will be offered another quota – a 3rd for the men -, on a non-nominative basis this time.

Defay ensures, Thyssen eliminated

On the women’s side, Johanne Defay qualified for round 6, the round which precedes the grand final. To access it, she will have to rank among the first two out of four. The Reunionese will face the Australian Sally Fitzgibbons, the Peruvian Sol Aguirre and the Spaniard Nadia Erostarbe. That’s it for Tessa Thyssen, eliminated in the 7th round of the repechage.
