Job. Using humans rather than AI remains profitable in the vast majority of sectors

“Will I be replaced by a robot? Will artificial intelligence steal my job? Will she take my job?” Basically, these questions are not new. But the recent advent of large language models (LLM), on which conversational agents like ChatGPTbrings back the worry they express.

The famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology looked into the subject, and its findings are intended to be reassuring: humans are (for the moment) more profitable than AI in a large majority of jobs.

“Researchers modeled the cost of automating various tasks in the United States, particularly in jobs where computer vision could be implemented – such as teaching or real estate appraisal – to determine the likelihood of AI replacing labor”, reports Bloomberg. “Computer vision” is the branch of computing that deals with how machines can “learn” from large quantities of images and videos, with the aim of automating certain tasks normally involving the visual system. human.

Using AI is expensive

If researchers have focused on computer vision, it is because cost modeling is more developed there than in other areas of AI. They reviewed its uses throughout the economy, “examining its applicability to every profession in almost every industry and sector,” write the researchers, including the bakery, for example.

Currently, they found, only 23 percent of workers could be replaced “profitably” when looking at wages paid in dollars. For other jobs, “it is more economical to use humans because AI-assisted visual recognition is expensive to install and operate,” reports Bloomberg.

Interviewed by the American site, Neil Thompson, director of the FutureTech Research project at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab, who led the study, explains:

“We demonstrate that there will be more automation in retail and healthcare, and less in construction, mining or real estate.”

“Generally, write the authors, our study suggests that job replacement [humains] by AI will be substantial but also progressive. We can therefore put in place a policy and training to mitigate the repercussions on employment.”
