Joe Miñoso will exit NBC’s Chicago Fire during the 300th episode airing Wednesday, November 4, after playing original character Joe Cruz for 300 episodes. Marking a Historic Milestone at Firehouse 51
Reaching 300 episodes puts the actor in rare company across network television history. Speaking with TV Insider, Joe Miñoso reflected on the scale of that achievement as the production prepares to air his farewell. Chicago Fire celebrates 300 episodes with a farewell to original cast member Joe Miñoso, who plays firefighter Joe Cruz, on Wednesday, November 4, as reported by TV Insider.

“I mean, technically historic, apparently. I just found out that I’m the Latino actor with the most amount of episodes as one character in network history,” Joe Miñoso told TV Insider. The performer noted that saying goodbye to the ensemble after a decade and a half remains bittersweet, describing the role as the single most important professional experience of his life.
The Shock of the Spinal Injury Arc
Viewers learned at the start of Season 15 that Cruz suffered a fractured spine during a massive warehouse fire. That physical toll leaves the firefighter unable to continue active duty at Firehouse 51. Joe Miñoso admitted that reading the premiere script brought immediate shock.

“I remember I was sitting in the producers’ office and I was staring at all of the headshots in the room, and I just kept looking at my picture and recognizing that it would no longer be in the mix of the ensemble,” Joe Miñoso told TV Insider. Despite the initial blow, the actor expressed deep satisfaction with how the character evolved from an aimless young roommate into a leader, father, and potential lieutenant.

Collaborating on the Final Exit
Writing out a foundational character required careful coordination between the actor and the creative team. Joe Miñoso credited showrunner Victor Teran for maintaining an open door during discussions about how to wrap up Cruz’s storyline. Bringing up early-season continuity points ensured the farewell honored the character’s long history on the show.
“We had some conversations. I referenced some things that maybe some of them may have not considered or thought about because they just weren’t here at the very beginning,” Joe Miñoso told TV Insider, praising the collaborative environment on set during a high-pressure production milestone.
