The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam lowered the curtain on Sunday on the event exhibition of the Dutch master Johannes Vermeer, the “greatest success” of the museum in terms of attendance, with some 650,000 visitors.
Since February 10, long queues have formed every day to admire the largest retrospective ever dedicated to the painter of the Dutch Golden Age: 28 canvases, i.e. most of his works.
“Although we have carefully limited the number of visitors to give them the best possible experience, the Vermeer exhibition becomes the biggest success in the history” of the museum, the Rijksmuseum said.
Some 650,000 visitors from 113 countries came to see “The Milkmaid” or “The Girl with a Pearl Earring”.
These paintings have been lent by museums and collections around the world, from the United States to Japan.
For those who did not have the chance to attend this retrospective: six paintings will remain in place at the museum from June 7. “The Girl in the Red Hat” and “Young Woman Playing the Virginal” will be exhibited in the museum’s honor gallery with four Vermeers from the Rijksmuseum until October 10.
