Joko and Klaas were ProSieben for a day

There has probably never been such a long experiment in this specific form on German television: the entertainers Joko and Klaas took control of the ProSieben program for a whole 24 hours. On Sunday the jokers focused on gags, games and fun. It had previously been unclear what the two would achieve. In the past, they had occasionally focused on serious and political topics during performances.

The private broadcaster ProSieben had handed over control to the two after they had won airtime on a ProSieben show. It was a mix of canned and live elements.

Anyone who tuned in to the program on Sunday only recognized the commercial breaks and the evening news. Klaas Heufer-Umlauf (40) and Joko Winterscheidt (45) were in different places in Berlin. It was a good idea for viewer Carola to follow a TV call from the two presenters in the afternoon and drive to a studio in Berlin-Adlershof to take part as a candidate in a quiz show newly designed by Joko and Klaas. Title: “A very good quiz (with a high prize amount)”. Because around 10:30 p.m. it was clear to Carola: she is 100,000 euros richer. She correctly answered the last question about which words the Queen song “We are the Champions” ends with. The two placed the quiz show at prime time from 8:15 p.m.

Joko and Klaas have been ProSieben’s entertainment powerhouses for years. On Sunday there was a revival of previous show acts – including lots of genital jokes. The broadcaster staged the 24 hours on social media. In the past, ProSieben has repeatedly presented itself as a broadcaster that tries out new things for younger people.

But ProSieben wasn’t enough for the two of them; they also hijacked the sister station Sat.1 for more than an hour. They burst into the Sat.1 breakfast television studio. It initially remained unclear whether the capture of the second station had been agreed with the television company.

What else did the ProSieben program look like? At midnight on Sunday, the two jokers greeted the TV audience from a rooftop in Berlin. “I can say whatever I want. Shit – I can say it. But I can also say: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to 24 hours of ‘Joko and Klaas against ProSieben’,” said Klaas.

The duo then carried fireworks to a cellar in east Berlin. Shortly afterwards, the two people who were outside set off the fireworks. ProSieben warned possible imitators: “The fireworks in the basement were monitored by professionals. There was no damage to the building. It is very clear: Please do not imitate it at home,” said a ProSieben spokesman for the German Press Agency. In response to a dpa inquiry, the Berlin fire department said there had been “no operation” that was “related to the ‘act’ described.”

After a night program with repeats (one show was even shown backwards) and best-of programs, the entertainers started Sunday morning with a live-streamed jogging tour across Berlin. In the morning there was a clip show with excerpts from ProSieben talk shows from the 90s. For around half an hour there were webcam images from the Namibia desert without comment, showing oryx antelopes at a waterhole. The comedians later met with their colleague Jakob Lundt and the rapper Sido in the empty Berlin Olympic Stadium to play the card game Uno. Klaas had to eat a playing card because he had the worst score.

At the end at midnight there were closing words. Klaas said, among other things: “We had a lot of fun, you don’t have to do it every day.” Joko: “A crazy good ride.”
