Jones Huala continues on hunger strike while the request for extradition advances in the Chilean court

After the endorsement of the extradition of the judge of guarantees, the Court of Appeals of Valdivia held a hearing on Monday and could rule in the next few hours so that the leader of the Mapuche Ancestral Resistance (RAM) is taken to Chile to fulfill his sentence of 9 years in prison.

Once the Court of Valdivia approves the extradition, the request will arrive in Argentina through the Chilean Foreign Ministry.

“After listening to the arguments of the parties, the courtroom of the Court of Appeals of Valdivia is already in a position to resolve. Although there are no defined deadlines, in Chile everything could be resolved this month and then extradition will depend on the timing of the Argentine courts.

Jones Huala was convicted in December 2018 for “arson attacks and possession of weapons” in Chile.

After having served the first three years in prison in Temuco, in January 2022, the Chilean justice system granted him conditional release.
