Joseph W. Saunders, former Visa Inc. CEO, has passed away

Joseph W. Saunders, the financial leader who orchestrated a historic corporate public offering and built an extensive career in global payments, passed away on November 2, 2026, according to The Denver Post. The expected transition of Visa Inc. from a private association into a publicly traded corporation stood in contrast to the immense scale of the change achieved under his leadership, culminating in what was then the largest initial public offering in U.S. history in 2008.

Guided Visa Through Digital Expansion

Saunders became Chairman and CEO of Visa Inc. in May 2007, guiding the company through its massive transformation and subsequent expansion into digital payments before retiring in March 2013. Prior to his tenure at Visa, his career in financial services included building Household Credit Services into an $18 billion business and launching the GM Card, recognized at the time as the largest co-branded credit card. He also held roles as Chairman and CEO of Providian Financial Corporation and Fleet Credit Card Services, and served as Chairman of MasterCard International’s Board of Directors in 1996. Once he stepped down from Visa, he continued participating in the investment sector by working as a Special Advisor for Reverence Capital Partners, alongside holding the positions of Chairman and General Partner at Green Visor Capital.

Established Scholarship Fund for Students

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Saunders earned both his bachelor’s degree in business administration and his MBA from the University of Denver, which awarded him an honorary doctorate in business in 2009 and welcomed him to its Board of Trustees. In 2018, he and his wife, Sharon, established the Saunders Leadership Academy Endowed Scholarship Fund at DU to provide scholarships, mentorship, and leadership development to students with significant financial need, many of whom are first-generation college students. His commitment to expanding educational opportunities also included serving as Chairman of the Board of Teach For All.

Remembered for Humor and Generosity

While his professional achievements shaped the financial services industry, those close to him remembered his humor, integrity, deep sense of fairness, and generosity of spirit. He leaves behind his wife, Sharon; his son, TJ, and daughter-in-law, Molly; his daughter, Christine, and son-in-law, Peter; his three granddaughters, Anna, Sophie, and Charlotte; and his sister, Laura. Friends and family will gather to celebrate his life on Friday, November 20, 2026, starting at 4:00 and concluding at 8:00 p.m. at the Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco.
