Kim Jung-woo, head of the Blue House National Situation Office, has stepped down from his post, accelerating a broader reshuffle of the second-term presidential staff as Kyeonggi Ilbo reported. Kim announced his departure early in the morning on the 8th via a post on his Facebook account, closing out a tenure that spanned 470 days.
Departure of the National Situation Office Chief
Kim stated that he was laying down the heavy responsibilities of leading the situation room after running continuously since taking office. Describing his time in the Blue House as a daily sequence of tensions, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to closely assist President Lee Jae-myung in securing the success of the popular sovereign government.
A former bureaucrat who passed the 40th administrative examination, Kim previously worked in the Ministry of Economy and Finance, represented the Democratic Party as a lawmaker for Gunpo-gap in the 20th National Assembly, and headed the Public Procurement Service during the Moon Jae-in administration.
Presidential Administration Fills Key Vacancies Following Kim Departure
With Kim’s departure, the administration is moving quickly to fill key vacancies across the presidential secretariat. Kim Tae-geun, currently serving as the autonomous development secretary within the political affairs office, is being floated as a potential successor in the situation room. This transition coincides with President Lee’s earlier designation of former lawmaker Choi In-ho as the new senior political affairs secretary.
Jeong-ok, the gender equality and family secretary, has had her resignation accepted following controversies surrounding alleged violations of the Farmland Act. Simultaneously, the administration is actively searching for replacements for Public Relations Planning Secretary Cho Han-sang and National Public Relations Secretary Lee Min-ju, both of whom have expressed their intent to step down.
Future Path for the Resigned Secretary
Closing out his statement regarding his exit from the presidential office, Kim emphasized that while his direct duties inside the Blue House have concluded, his dedication to the goals of the current administration remains entirely active. He indicated that his personal efforts to support the success of the sovereign government will continue outside the official staff structure.
