Joyce Carol Oates will chair the international jury of the NIFFF

Multi-finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, five-time winner of the Bram-Stoker Prize, this prolific and unclassifiable author will discuss her relationship to the imagination during the literary forum “New Worlds of Fantasy” on July 7, the NIFFF said in a press release Thursday. Since its creation in 2010, this forum has hosted George RR Martin (2014), Michael Moorcock (2015), Jean-Claude Mézières (2017) and David Cronenberg (2018).

With, “Blonde”, released in 2000, a romanticized and brutal biography of Marilyn Monroe, Joyce Carol Oates tackles subjects that are dear to her: feminine condition, splitting, mental health and relationship to reality. Its adaptation to the cinema should be released this year.

With more than 150 books to her credit, the American author has slipped into fantasy and thriller several times with Zombie (1995), The Ravine (2001) or The Man Without a Shadow (2018). She has also published mystery novels under the pseudonyms of Rosamond Smith and Lauren Kelly.

criticism of the United States

Revealed by “Eux” in 1970, which delves deep into the American proletariat, it appropriates genres such as horror, gothic and psychological thriller to restore the social and political violence of the United States. A “ruthless observer” of the current era, she probes it with raw realism: the defense of civil rights is at the heart of her work.

Considered one of the greatest writers in the contemporary English language and one of the most prolific too, Joyce Carol Oates, 83, received the Cino Del Duca World Prize for Lifetime Achievement in 2020. This award is considered the antechamber of the Nobel.
