“We wanted to ease him back into playing, which he did, and it’s good to see that he can go through three weeks of training,
” Sharks boss JP Pietersen told reporters on Thursday, previewing his side’s round-three URC derby against the Stormers at Cape Town Stadium.
Pietersen has backed playmakers Zekhethelo Siyaya and Gianni Lombard to make an immediate impact against the Stormers, with fullback Siyaya stepping into the back three alongside Springboks Edwill van der Merwe and Ethan Hooker following Luan Giliomee’s departure to the Bulls earlier in the week. Lombard, an off-season arrival from the Lions, is set to make his debut for the Durban-based outfit off the bench.
Backing Siyaya for the Derby
Pietersen explained that Siyaya had been managing a hamstring niggle before getting the opportunity to showcase his footwork, kicking game, and ability to operate at flyhalf. Describing the 19-year-old as an incredibly good rugby player who looks like a very mature player on the field, the Sharks boss noted, “It was actually good timing for him to play the Stormers game.
” Pietersen added that Siyaya is still a kid and they must slow down with him, while stating, “I’m excited that Siyaya is back in the team, and I know what he’s going to produce.

Lombard Ready to Debut
Lombard, whom Pietersen referred to as G,
will cover both flyhalf and fullback off the bench. Pietersen acknowledged that the 28-year-old former Junior Springboks star had previously struggled with injuries that prevented him from getting going, but praised his contributions in pre-season. According to the coach, Lombard can kick with both feet, is a good kicker for poles, can find space, and acts as a great communicator. Pietersen also noted that No 6 Matt Romao was always going to start and is expected to get an opportunity against Lyon in the EPCR Challenge Cup next week.
