National coach Julian Nagelsmann is making a U-turn and now sees Joshua Kimmich in the right-back position in the national team. He also initially decided on Manuel Neuer as number one in the goalkeeper duel.
“Josh is a candidate for the back right,” said Nagelsmann on Saturday evening in the ZDF sports studio, and he had already spoken about this with the Bayern professional.
Kimmich is ready to play where he can help best. “He’s a player who always puts himself at the service of the team. He can also have an influence if he doesn’t play on the six, but rather on the right back,” said Nagelsmann, who recently clearly counted Kimmich among the defensive midfielders.
Nagelsmann sees his captain Ilkay Gündogan (FC Barcelona) in a position further forward in the future, protected by two more defensive sixes.
When asked whether he would choose Neuer or Marc-André ter Stegen for the regular place in goal, Nagelsmann answered cautiously: “We have two exceptionally good goalscorers, unfortunately Marc is injured at the moment. Manu is doing exceptionally well, the comeback “It was an emotional moment because it was a very serious injury. I’m in contact with him. He’s an outstanding, exceptional goalkeeper.”
When asked again whether it would come down to Neuer, Nagelsmann said clearly: “If everything continues as it currently seems towards March, then it will come down to that.”
It remains to be seen how long Ter Stegen will need to get fit again after his back operation. “That’s completely normal,” said Nagelsmann: “He’s not available at the moment, it was the other way around for a while. Manu knows that and Marc knows that. In the end, football is about being collaborative. The job of a coach “It’s just making decisions. (…) If one person is clearly better than the other in March, then I have the joy and also the pain of making decisions both positive and negative.”
Nagelsmann’s last course before the European Championships in Germany awaits in March. The opponents are France and the Netherlands.
