“July School Calendar: Impact on Vacation and Absenteeism in Wallonia-Brussels Federation”

For the first time, the school year will end in July in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. Officially, school will be over on Friday July 7 and no longer on June 30 as before.

This staggered school calendar poses problems for some parents who want to go on vacation before prices rise sharply. Consequence: schools expect a significant increase in absenteeism the first week of July.

With the problems that this can create such as not going to get the diploma after the certification tests (CEB, CE1D, CESS…) which you must nevertheless sign to access the next class or another school.

The schools point out that going on vacation is not a valid excuse and that a word from the parents is not enough.

For the director of Notre-Dame in Anderlecht, when a parent asks to go on vacation earlier, his answer is always the same
“Students must come until July 7”says Christine Toumpsin. “The latency is in the fact that indeed once the bulletins, the CEBs and all the class councils are finished, we can hear but legally speaking, it is until July 7 the presence at school”recalls the director. “I am going to send a letter to the parent reminding them of the compulsory school rule, reminding them that the exam dates are until the end of June and the children must be present for the exam, otherwise their year is in danger.”

Questioned last week in Parliament, the Minister of Education Caroline Désir indicated that controls of the school obligation would indeed take place. Monitoring will be organized during the first two years of this reform, at the beginning and at the end of the school year. It will be carried out on a representative sample of 4,798 establishments.
