It is the third approach to the moon Europa at a distance of less than 500 km in history, according to NASA. It is the closest photograph of the moon Europa ever recorded by a spacecraft since Jan. 3, 2000, when NASA’s Galileo spacecraft approached Europa’s surface at a distance of 351 kilometers.

Europa is the sixth largest moon in the solar system, slightly smaller than Earth’s moon. Scientists think there is a saltwater ocean beneath miles of ice crust. This could be a condition that favors the existence of life beneath the surface.
