1. FC Kaiserslautern has destroyed Hertha BSC’s hopes of a home final in the German Cup. The Palatinate team beat their second division rivals 3-1 in the quarter-finals on Wednesday evening and moved into the semi-finals. In the Berlin Olympic Stadium, which was sold out with 74,245 spectators, Jan Elvedi (5th), Richmond Tachie (38th) and Filip Kaloc (69th) scored the goals for Kaiserslautern. Fabian Reese only scored for Hertha in stoppage time (91′).
Kaiserslautern has won the DFB Cup twice so far (1990 and 1996). On Tuesday, another second division team, Fortuna Düsseldorf, reached the semi-finals. Bayer Leverkusen once morest VfB Stuttgart and 1. FC Saarbrücken (3rd league) once morest Mönchengladbach are the other quarter-final pairings, which will be played next week.
