Kanjoor Church: A Pilgrim’s Guide to St. Mary’s Forona Church and Festival

Kanjoor: St. Mary’s Forona Church, Kanjoor continues to be crowded with pilgrims celebrating the feast of St. Sebastian. Though the main functions of the festival are over, the pilgrim rush continues till the Ettamidum celebration concludes on the 27th.

Daily mass is at 5.30 am, 7.00 am and 5.00 pm. There is a facility for taking the main vow during Thirunal celebrations. Only on Tirunal celebration days, devotees are also crowded to take oil from the elephant lamp hung on the church porch and touch their heads. The oil in the elephant lamp gifted to the church by Shaktan Tampuran, the King of Kochi, is considered divine medicine. Pilgrims visit the ancient Kanjoor church, which has a lot of history, even after the festival days.

The ancient remains of the church attract visitors. Altar decorated with ancient carvings, beautiful paintings, monolith stone cross in the churchyard, main entrance elephant door, granite pillars, monolith baptismal font, inscription tombstones, old style pulpit and palm leaves evoke cultural heritage and historical memories. AD 10 Kanjoor church which is believed to have been established in 01 Forona was established in 1896. Although the old church has been renovated several times, the church has been built in the British style and remains untouched by time.
