Kansas City leaders say a new program is making a difference in reducing crime. About 20 percent of Kansas City’s violence crimes happen in the Sante Fe Neighborhood, which spans 20 blocks from Prospect Avenue to Indiana and from 27th Street to Linwood. Kansas City 360, a new and comprehensive approach to reducing crime, is making strides to do just that. In 2023, there have been two homicides in the Santa Fe Neighborhood. That’s compared to nine homicides at this point in 2022. “Area canvasses are being conducted at least twice a month, where we are knocking on doors, meeting Kansas Citians where they are, and they are joining us,” said Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves. “We’re also conducting enforcement on those resistant to positive change.”The initiative is part of the Joint Violence Reduction Initiative and has seen an investment of over $3.5 million. It was modeled after a program in Omaha, Nebraska that reported a 50% reduction of violent crime in its targeted areas.Officials and neighborhood associations will continue to monitor the progress of the KC 360 program closely, hopeful that the positive trends in crime reduction will persist and provide a safer environment.
