Karel Malík, Founder of Czech Band Echt!, Dies at 64


Karel Malík, a multifaceted artist known as the founder of the Czech pubrock band Echt!, has died at the age of 64. The news was confirmed by his colleague, Tomáš Schilla, on Tuesday night.

Malík was a prolific creator, excelling as a graphic designer, poet, and musician.he possessed a remarkable ability to play multiple instruments, sing, compose music, and craft compelling song lyrics.

“He was a great friend with whom we spent long lovely years,” Schilla stated. “he was inspiring in how he could comment on Rock’s current events.And I also loved his linocuts.”

A graduate of the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (UMPRUM), Malík seamlessly blended artistic disciplines. His musical journey included performances with Babalet and Music Prague, showcasing his saxophone skills.

In 1988, Malík established Echt!, a band that became synonymous with his creative vision. he served as the band’s composer and lyricist, guiding them through the release of four albums. Thier debut, “Bitter Drink,” arrived in 1997, followed by “Sad things,” “I Feel Beatiful,” and a live album, “15 Years Live in Acropolis.”

Beyond music, Malík authored several poetry collections, including “The Viscera,” “A Safe for Echt!,” and “Chaos.” He uniquely paired his verses with his own distinctive linocut artwork.
