Olympic snowboard champion Benjamin Karl won the parallel giant slalom in Scuol on Saturday. The Lower Austrian prevailed in the grand final against the Slovenian Tim Mastnak and celebrated his 21st individual World Cup victory. Andreas Prommegger won his race for third place against Roland Fiwickeler from Italy, Claudia Riegler lost in hers to the Japanese Tsubaki Miki and came fourth.

The 50-year-old Riegler had to admit defeat to eventual winner Lucia Dalmasso from Italy in the semifinals. Second place went to Jasmin Coratti (ITA). The 43-year-old Prommegger lost out in the semifinals against compatriot Karl. Arvid Auner was eliminated in the quarter-finals, Sabine Schöffmann, Fabian Obmann and Alexander Payer were eliminated in the round of 16.

“It’s nice that I still have that, that quality when I prepare so specifically that it really works,” said Karl, who really wanted the win. “It’s wonderful that it worked like that. It’s huge and so fun to drive here. It’s like free driving in race mode.” It was his second win of the season after the one in Cortina d’Ampezzo in mid-December.

Prommegger said he was “mega happy” that he pulled it off like that. “The established ones are back in full force. We did quite well.” Now it’s off to the home races in Bad Gastein. “The entire Austrian team will certainly be driving along with their chests on their chest.” Riegler was close to the podium. “I conjured up a few really good runs and I’m totally happy with my performance. After being happy with myself today, I’m also happy with this fourth place.”
