If Kaspar Jancis should ever make a feature film, it could be something like “Tuvalu”.

Jancis, known as an animated film director, musician and theater artist, who will be hosted by the HÕFF film club next week, saw a strange film by the German Veit Helmer in the early 2000s.

“I was and still am a big fan of films without dialogue. The conditional and metaphorical absurd world of “Tuvalu” is exactly what appeals to me as a filmmaker. Its certain unpolishedness and childish joy, unpretentious play and inventive humor made me, still a film school student at the time, feel that I could do the same,” he says, talking about one of his favorite films.

The action of “Tuvalu”, completed in 1999, revolves around a dilapidated and unpopular bathing establishment. Anton tries to impress his blind father that everything is in the best order and to resist his brazen brother’s plan to blow up the whole house in order to build something more profitable in its place.

Starring Denis Lavant and Chulpan Hamatova.

“It’s wild and colorful. A love story, a comedy and a modern fairy tale, the characters of which say little – they act,” characterized “Tuvalu” by the European Film Academy, for which it was nominated for the Discovery of the Year award in 2000.

The film won numerous awards at the time and was also shown by PÖFF.

The HÕFF film club event will take place on Thursday, March 28 at 6 p.m. in the Haapsalu cultural center. Next to “Tuvalu” there will also be talk about Jancis’s own work – his latest animated film “Antipolis” was completed only last year and it also has connections with “Tuvalu”.

The goal of the HÕFF film club, which meets once a month in Haapsalu, is to popularize genre films as art.

Films selected by Estonian filmmakers will be screened. Moonika Siimets, Jaan Toomik, Jaak Kilmi, Rasmus Merivoo, Janno Jürgens, Õ faction, Sander Maran and Oskar Lehemaa have been guests of the club in the past.

Joining the club is free – for this you need to fill out a form that can be found at the event or on the website of the Haapsalu Horror and Fantasy Film Festival.

The HÕFF film club is organized by HÕFF and PÖFF. Co-organizer is Haapsalu Cultural Center. The film club is supported by the local initiative program of Lääne County and the city of Haapsalu.
