“Thus, the immortal song ‘Kayalarikat Walayerinjho Pola Vala Kilukiya Sundaree…’ was born. It was not just the birth of a movie song.”

P.It is the birth centenary of Bhaskaran, the poet and lyricist. ‘To see the blossoms of my song collection/Ponnushasse, Ponnushasse, come and join us’, the songwriter waited with his eardrums and kanivellari on his singing plate for a beautiful equanimity.

‘Saltwater and seawater annually
The head of the stone tree and the storm
The mud will rot and fall out of the mud pit
Bhaskaran Mash has described himself in a poem (Another Thoni Yatra) as ‘Manam Vum Chuzhum Kayalthuruthimpirannon Naam’.

And the backwaters that swam in salt water
And men who flourished in separation and mud
I want to go far away
In the poem ‘Kayalkat’, he said that ‘chapalasankalpam has been brought to the backyard’. Kayal means soil, people and their labor, to the poet who wrote all this. Even when he took up the pen of the songwriter later, Mash did not forget this lake. And so, the immortal song ‘Kayalarikat Valayerenya Hoke Vala Kilukiya Sundari…’ was born. It was not just the birth of a film song. The first Malayalam movie song that was full of Malayalam was mixed with the blood of that song child’s Poomeni. Later, using the same rhythm, Akittam, a Ponnanik, writes a love poem called ‘Kaumarasamyamam’.

So natural and instinctive were the secular imaginations of religions intermingling with humanity for Bhaskaran Masha’s lyricist. Check out this song from the movie ‘Mudupadam’;
‘Manathullaru valyamavan
No religion, no caste
Ponnonam will cost crores
Baburaj composed the melody for this song. On another occasion when Vidyadhara composed an Onapatam for the Master, Bhaskaran Mash repeated the same refrain, with minor variations;
‘An honorable great uncle
Uncle in Mavelinadu
Ponnonam will cost crores
I will wear a hat for the festival….’ Onakodi and the festival hat were interchangeable clothes for this secularist. So, ‘If Allah had no mercy on earth
It must be said that a song of orphans that smelled like ‘All and all are orphans…’ fell off from the same pen, from the pen filled with the ink of humanity.

This songwriter lived the entire life of a Malayali through songwriting. He attributed the sweetness of love to charcoal water, its fragrance to sesame oil and the color of gold to turmeric. The copper pot was lowered into the pier, and the lady named Pulari then dived into Peratukulirneet. Medakat turned into a storm, and Kanakanilaw became Kanivellari.
‘Be in the yard at ten o’clock
Kasturi Mullaik Katukuth…’ song deeply evokes the national identity of the Malayali, through a typical bhavana meeting with ten whites, Kasturi Mulla and Katukuth. Like its last stanza, there is no other celebration of Malayalam;
‘Leopards play at night in Manat
Paavakooth in Mayannurkavi
The female blooms at night
Chekante mor chenthamara…’ Why, our stone-hewn pit becomes a love-scene By the touch of earth;
‘Let’s cut stones, and your silver bangle rattles…’
In this song we can also hear and see ‘Pattampipuzhaktulan Chandrika Pattu Virikahende’.

The song ‘Kayalannu Chirichal’ is from the movie ‘Kakka’. ‘If one lake laughs, the whole lake will be filled with tears
If you smile, the golden pearl will burst
That pearl this pearl
Manimuth will kill people
Kakka Perukana Chakkipenni
Eyes and laughter are full of pearls….’
In this backwater song, we hear ‘Akuthikuthana Varambat’ and ‘Kottaramakayalile Kottarapookadavil’. It was Vailopilly who addressed Kerala as ‘Kayalal slathanaeelachayalararnezhumamme’. In P. Bhaskaran’s song, that hair-hair- was loose and twirled.
